Cinema Q in March: The Witnesses

The Denver Film Society is proud to announce the March film in their monthly Cinema Q program celebrating the best in new GLBT titles coming soon to the StarzFilmCenter.
"The Witnesses" is Director André Téchiné's ("Wild Reeds") fast-paced and compelling story featuring a wonderful cast and fascinating characters, set in Paris in the mid-1980s, an era of sexual freedom. Recent parents Sarah (Emmanuelle Béart), a novelist, and Mehdi (Sami Bouajila), a vice cop, both sleep with other partners because, as Sarah says, otherwise she would feel imprisoned in their marriage. Enjoying a summer holiday at the seashore, Sarah invites her friend Adrien (Michel Blanc), a middle-aged doctor, who brings his handsome young protégé Manu (Johan Libéreau). Surprisingly, Mehdi and Manu begin a passionate affair. But everything changes when a mysterious new disease appears.

Calling all aspiring filmmakers/lovers of Democracy

The Denver Office of Cultural Affairs (DOCA) and Denver Film Society (DFS), producers of the Starz Denver Film Festival announce the creation and launch of the Cinemocracy Film Festival, an open source film festival to coincide with the 2008 Democratic National Convention. As an official event of the Denver 2008 Convention Host Committee, Cinemocracy calls for open participation in the political process; a multitude of voices during an event that shapes the political future of the United States.

During a year of monumental change, DOCA and DFS invite citizens of the world to speak out and share ideas on the definition of democracy through the creation of short films. All films submitted via free upload will be judged by the online public and the top 10 will be screened at a free public event in Denver during the week of the 2008 Democratic National Convention (August 25-28). Additionally, the winning film will be screened as part of the official program of the 31st Starz Denver Film Festival (November 13-23).

Submitted films can be up to five minutes in length and can be uploaded from March 1 through July 15 to Cinemocracy. Voting will remain open until August 1.

New Monsoon Earth Day Concert at the Oriental Theater

San Francisco-based quintet New Monsoon, along with Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, has announced a pair of concerts to benefit Rock the Earth and celebrate Earth Day, on April 4 and April 5 at Denver’s Oriental Theater. $1 from every ticket sale will be donated to Rock The Earth, a non-profit organization helping to preserve our environment. The bands will flip flop closing sets, and play a joint set at the end of each show. After packing the legendary Fillmore in San Francisco three years in a row, New Monsoon returns to the Rocky Mountain state, with Dumpstaphunk, which is New Orleans’ legend Ivan Neville’s newest project.

The band takes its audience on a multi-faceted musical journey marrying acoustic and electric instrumentation, fusing numerous genres from bluegrass to reggae, jazz to funk all in one rock ‘n roll package. In fact, one of their popular live recordings, released in 2005, New Monsoon Live at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival was nominated for a JAMMY award as live album of the year.

Colorado AIDS Project Announces New Board Leadership and New Board Members

As Colorado AIDS Project (CAP) begins its 25th year, they are excited to announce the appointment of new officers to the Executive Committee as well as the addition of two new Directors.

2008 Colorado AIDS Project Board Officers:

Rich Corbetta, an attorney with Corbetta & O'Leary, P.C., has been appointed Board President. Rich joined the Board of Directors in 2003, and recently held the position of Secretary.
Jacquelyn Kilmer, an attorney with Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck , PC, has been appointed Board Vice President.
Matt Adrian of Adrian and Associates, a recent addition to the Board of Directors, has been named Secretary.

The Gender Identity Center of Colorado

The Gender Identity Center of Colorado, Inc., (GIC) is a non-profit corporation organized in 1978 and incorporated in June 1980. The organization was formed to provide support to transsexuals, or those people who cross dress, or are non-traditional in their gender identity. The Center is also an informational and educational resource to the community at large.
The GIC is available to anyone, male or female, who can benefit from its services or resources, including spouses and significant others, parents, and siblings.

The GIC is a tax exempt, 501(3)c nonprofit corporation which provides these public services to the community, but receives none of its support from tax dollars. It is funded by collection of door fees for meetings, tuition for seminars and workshops, membership dues and donations. Receipts can be given for any donation of money or materials. Denver Center options rights for Girls Only

The Denver Center for the Performing Arts President Randy Weeks and Denver Center Attractions Director of Programming and Operations John Ekeberg announced today that they have optioned the worldwide rights to GIRLS ONLY – The Secret Comedy of Women, by Barbara Gehring and Linda Klein. The initial production under this agreement will open at The Garner Galleria Theatre at the Denver Performing Arts Complex in September 2008, starring the authors.

“We are delighted that we’ve come to this agreement with Barbara Gehring and Linda Klein,” says Weeks. “We look forward to a successful run of the show at the Garner Galleria Theatre and are excited to share this title with our colleagues nationwide to fully realize the potential of this play on a wider scale.”

Called “raucously funny” by the Rocky Mountain News and “intelligent” and “astute” by The Denver Post, GIRLS ONLY – The Secret Comedy of Women is an original comedy that celebrates the honor, truth, humor and silliness of being a girl. With a two-woman cast and female-dominated audiences, the play has found quick popularity in its unique examination of all things girl. I was given up to a shelter in Wyoming because it appears that I'm 90% deaf. They asked MaxFund to take me in, and the great folks here welcomed me with loving arms! And they're so glad they did because I'm a FABULOUS boy! Even though I'm a middle-aged fella, I'm in extremely great health! My hips are solid, my heart is healthy, and my temperament is top-notch. I act more like a dog half my age!

I'm extremely friendly, house-broken, house-trained, and loyal. I'm a sweet boy who just needs an understanding home. It really isn't a great big deal owning a deaf dog. MaxFund has ALL KINDS of resources and information to help you understand what is needed for my care.

Randy Jackson's Music Club, Vol. 1

Paula Abdul's video for her new song "Dance Like There's No Tomorrow" has been out for awhile (you can check it out HERE if you haven't seen it yet or would like another gander at it) and the song is inoffensive but it would have been nice if she had bothered to learn one new dance move in the past 20 years for the video.

A friend of mine is a little more forgiving and said, "It totally is every video of hers from the 80's/90's... BUT she looks great... and it's not bad for someone as old as she is, who's always drugged out of her gourd."

Anyways, Paula's co-host Randy Jackson has an album coming out March 11 and the new album's first single is fellow Paula's "Dance Like There's No Tomorrow." Randy's claim to fame is as a superstar music producer and he's always dropping names of the famous people he's worked with on Idol so it'll be interesting to see what kind of talent pool he's gonna be working with or if Paula's the showstopper.

Stonewall Democrats General Membership Meeting

This meeting we will be discussing the upcoming convention for the National Stonewall Democrats. The Stoneewall Dems will be forming the following committees to facilitate the organization and execution of the Stonewall convention.

1) Transportation – Chair Bill Fleming – The tentative purpose of this committee would be to interface with Grey Line on transportation issues at the convention. Control point for negotiations/pricing/contract.

2) Silent Auction - The tentative purpose of this committee would be to organize the silent auction. This will involve calling potential donors to solicit donations of items to be auctioned off. Arrange the programming and launch of the event.

3) Delegate Relations/Host Committee - The tentative purpose of this committee would be to establish a public face that delegates will be interacting with before the event and during the event to facilitate their arrival, any information or directions that they need/require. Provide onsite table staffing for questions during convention. Suggested Subcommittees: Ambassadors – on-call people available prior to and during that delegates can contact for quick response to information/directions/help.

4) Opening Night Reception- - The tentative purpose of this committee would be to organize and execute the opening night reception. Interfacing with Hotel relations to make sure all room/requirements are met.

5) Bar Crawl - The tentative purpose of this committee would be to organize and execute the Bar Crawl on Friday. This committee will likely contact Bars for bar tickets, arrange approved bar list. Work with Transportation committee to set bus pickup areas.

6) Saturday Dinner/Cocktail party/Awards dinner - The tentative purpose of this committee would be to organize and execute the VIP cocktail/dinner on Saturday night. This committee would work with Hotel Relations to make sure the room is set up correctly.

7) Booklet/Program/welcome bag - The tentative purpose of this committee would be to set up and publish the booklet/program and coordinating assembly of welcome bag. They would contact advertisers to solicit adds.

8) Speakers – The tentative purpose of this committee would be schedule and obtain speakers for the event. (Friday: Breakfast, Lunch. Saturday : Breakfast, Lunch, Awards dinner)

9) Merchandise - The tentative purpose of this committee would be decide on sellable merchandise (T-shirts, mugs, tote bags) that will be available to sell to delegates.

10) Membership – Chair: Nick Bush- The purpose of this committee would be facilitate the growth and retention of SWD membership.

11) Communications – Chair: Jessica Bowers - The purpose of this committee would be facilitate the growth of the SWD imagine, message.
12) Vital Issues – Chair: Matthew Duckett – Monitor legislative developments, research and discuss relevant issues to the community and the other vital issues to the LGBT community in Colorado. Celebration of Courage: The Little Rock Nine at Starz

During the 50th Anniversary year of the Little Rock Crisis the Denver Film Society is honoring the 9 courageous individuals who, by the simple act of going to school, contributed greatly to the civil rights movement in America. Three films will be screened followed by discussion and a reception at the Starz FilmCenter with Denver resident Carlotta LaNier and other members of the Little Rock Nine.

JOURNEY TO LITTLE ROCK ~ Tuesday, Feb 26 at 7 p.m.
Minnijean Brown Trickey is an ordinary woman on an extraordinary mission. At the age of 16, she was one of the Little Rock Nine, the nine black teenagers in Little Rock Arkansas who defied death threats, hostile white demonstrators, and the National Guard, to attend an all-white high school. At the age of 22, she was active in the non-violence movement for civil rights and for peace. Her work eventually led her to live in Canada. At the age of 28, she and her husband moved to Northern Ontario, looking for a more meaningful life. There she learned to raise animals, farmed the land by hand, and gave birth at home to five of her six children. At the age of 47, she was supporting Native people's fight for their rights, protesting to save the environment, and working towards equality for all. At the age of 58, she returned to the United States and received the Congressional Gold Medal. Journey to Little Rock: The Untold Story of Minnijean Brown Trickey is an amazing journey of the heart, mind and spirit. Featuring the music of Sarah Vaughan and Bruce Cockburn, this documentary contains rarely seen archival footage, exclusive footage of the Little Rock Nine at the 1997 commemoration of the 40th anniversary, and powerful moments from The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Mile -Hi Bullseye Dart League Finals to be held in March

The Mile-Hi Bullseye Dart League is a non-profit corporation that has been in existence for over 11 years and going strong. They are a social group for people who enjoy playing soft tip darts or want to learn how to play darts and enjoy meeting other people and traveling to new bars or host establishments.

The league's main focus is to provide a fun night out and help raise money for deserving charities. Play is from 7:30 until about 9:30 on Tuesday nights. Standings during league play are not as important as having a good time. Currently, the league has over 100 members and keeps growing with each season, adding bars and players.

The Season 28 Finals will be held in Denver on March 4 and 8.

First Round - Tuesday, March 4
Captain Meeting at Charlie's at 7:00 p.m.
First Round Play Follows (approximately 7:30 p.m.) At Various Bars

Patricia Nell Warren's The Front Runner

First published in 1974, Patricia Nell Warren's The Front Runner was a breakthrough bestseller about the triumphs and tragedies of a gay Olympic hopeful named Billy Sive. It is an absolute classic so do yourself a favor and run out and get yourself a copy today.

At the time of publication in 1974, here's what one reviewer from The St. Louis Post Dispatch had to say about the impact of The Front Runner: "Fascinating ... Meet the Denver FrontRunners

Taking their name from the famous Patricia Nell Warren book, The Frontrunner (buy a copy TODAY if you've never read it!), the Denver FrontRunners are a group of local GLBT folks who meet up twice a week to stretch their long sexy legs, socialize and enjoy some beautiful Colorado scenery.

Saturday morning walk/run:
Denver Frontrunners meets every Saturday morning at 9 a.m. (gay time), in front of the Moore Elementary school at 9th Avenue, between Downing and Corona Streets, across the street from the King Soopers market. Walkers tour the Cheesman Park area, catching views of the Front Range. Runners most often head to Washington Park via the Marion Street Parkway (total run = 5 to 6 miles). Most everybody meets up for food and fun at a local spot afterwards.

Thursday evening trail runs:
Some of the runners also meet regularly for Thursday evening trail runs in the Foothills (daylight permitting). The locations and times do vary.

DATE: Denver Area Tennis Enthuisiasts

The 2007 season has officially ended. However, weather permitted, DATE will still meet on Saturday mornings and Monday evenings at City Park during the off-season. So, come out and swing!

DATE is a very informal group and they like it that way. They play a mixed doubles format, based on level. They split up the courts based on level and folks just sort of jump in and play a few games and then switch things up to make sure everyone gets to play. If there are enough courts, people play full sets. DATE is not a competitive group, so if you're looking for that, join a USTA team too! DATE is a social tennis group that is full of players who are just out to enjoy themselves and improve their tennis games.

Founded in 2000, the Denver-based Colorado Gay Ice Hockey Association (CGIHA) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to train GLBT hockey players for national and international competition in an environment free from all forms of harassment and discrimination, and which encourages fair play, openness, and friendship; and to provide a compelling and social atmosphere which promotes the growth of leadership, coaching, and playing skills. George Romero's Diary of the Dead at Starz FilmCenter

When a group of young filmmakers venture into the woods to shoot a low-budget horror film and discover that the dead have arisen from their graves to feast on the flesh of the living, they decide to capture the chaos on camera for the ultimate “cinema verite” experience but find that it causes more than the usual production headaches. Community HIV forum tonight

The monthly Community HIV Forum is tonight at Our Savior's Lutheran Church at 9th and Emerson beginning at 6 p.m. Dr. Greenberg will be speaking on "Understanding your Labs," and food will be provided by Whole Foods Catering. The educational forum is a monthly event which now takes place on Tuesdays. This forum is intended for people living with HIV.

Be a parrot's Valentine

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and what better time to show a little loving to the parrots in the Sanctuary program at The Gabriel Foundation Aviary and Adoption Center? The Foundation provides sanctuary and permanently cares for birds who are not suitable for adoption or placement in foster care, as well as for birds whose owners have asked that they remain at The Gabriel Foundation. All sanctuary birds receive the same high level of care as the birds available for adoption and foster care. Romantic Colorado Getaways: Crested Butte

Today, the National Trust for Historic Preservation named Crested Butte, Colorado one of its 2008 “Dozen Distinctive Destinations.” Since 2000, the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) has annually selected communities across the United States that offer cultural and recreational experiences different from the typical vacation destination. The exhibit features historic clothing from Crested Butte that will rotate frequently using the museum’s sizable textile collection. The museum, located at 331 Elk Ave., nominated Crested Butte for the designation. Visitors and residents are invited to enjoy an evening of Crested Butte fun, refreshments and free admission to the museum.

Today the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization, announced that it has joined the growing coalition of organizations supporting the platform of Divided We Fail, a movement to propel our nation’s leaders to work together to provide all Americans with access to affordable, quality health care and long-term financial security.

“While access to quality, affordable health care should be considered a basic right, it is fast becoming a high-priced luxury that is out of reach for more and more people,” said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. “We are pleased to join with these organizations that are committed to responding to this urgent health care crisis affecting all Americans, including the GLBT community.”

Divided We Fail is a joint collaboration between AARP, Business Roundtable, Service Employees International Union and National Federation of Independent Business.
